"Since old times in Japan there has been a culture of converting the cocoons of silkworms into fibers that get used as an insulating fill for clothing and bedding.  To distinguish it from "momen" (cotton), which has the character "wata", it is called "mawata" as the raw material comes from the valuable cocoons (silk) that have been viewed as priceless treasures.  It was about 7 or 8 years ago that I first started incorporating this material into my collections as I became intrigued with mawata when I discovered its use in winter kimonos, as well as haori and other pieces of nightwear from the Edo period that I had been collecting.  When actually utilizing mawata in my products I came to know that not only does it have excellent heat retaining properties along with great moisture permeability, but it also possesses a suppleness to it that creates a beautiful draping effect; I became very enamored with it.  I am always thinking that I want to express the brilliant nature of traditionally used materials such as this in creating modern garments for use today."
